“As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” Luke 9:51

I always wonder at how often the disciples misunderstood Jesus. Jesus was so sure of why he was here and what he needed to be doing. He was totally committed to his mission and strategic about how he undertook it.

I wonder about us and our churches – and our engagement in mission. Often mission can just be an add-on to what a church is doing, or the domain of a few enthusiasts. Even in churches more committed to mission, what is done can just be based on historic projects or on-going relationships. Often that can be good - it is important to have long-term commitments and ensure relationships are built up. Yet are we really seeking to follow God in his mission in the world, being strategic about how we partner and what we emphasise?

No one church can do everything, but are we asking “Where does God want us involved?” Are we asking the hard questions? What about links to our local mission and communities? What about the fact that our own country and wider Europe is increasingly a mission field? What about the large areas of the world where few have heard about Christ or had the chance to experience his love? What about the large and increasing urban conurbations?

“For the joy that was set before him...” Hebrews 12:2

Jesus’ mission wasn’t just about being resolute, but looked forward to the joy of fulfilment when those from every nation, tribe, people and language could experience reconciliation with God. We hope that these short articles will encourage you to look at the bigger picture, seeing the joy of being part of God’s mission in his world, and of reaching out to those currently unreached.
